About the event
Temple stay is a unique cultural and spiritual experience that offers a chance to immerse oneself in traditional Thai Buddhist culture and lifestyle in the peace atmosphere. The program takes place in converted church in Knaphill, Woking which is the Meditation Surrey Centre now, where participants can participate in various activities such as meditation, chanting, volunteering, and Thai-style meals.
One of the highlights of temple stay is the opportunity to participate in morning chanting and meditation with the resident monks, an experience that provides a glimpse into the daily routine of temple life. Participants also have the chance to learn about the history and teachings of Buddhism, as well as engage in conversation with the monks to gain a deeper understanding of their way of life.
In addition to the spiritual aspect, temple stay also provides an opportunity to disconnect from the fast-paced modern world and connect with nature. Our temple is situated in beautiful vicinity, offering a peaceful escape from the works and distractions of daily life.
Temple stay programmes are available for individuals, families, and groups, and its range is 2 days 2 nights in duration. The program is suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds, regardless of religious affiliation. It is a unique opportunity to broaden one's perspective, deepen one's understanding of spirituality and Buddhism principles, and engage in personal reflection.
Qualification
Participants need to comply with the regulations using in our temple, which is 8 precepts practice.
The 8 Precepts of Buddhism are ethical guidelines for lay followers to follow in order to progress on the path towards spiritual improvement. These Precepts are:
- Refrain from taking life (not killing any living being).
- Refrain from taking things not freely given (not stealing).
- Refrain from sexual activity.
- Refrain from false speech (not lying or saying pejorative term).
- Refrain from intoxicants that lead to carelessness.
- Refrain from taking food at improper times (not eating after noon).
- Refrain from dancing, singing, music and watching improper shows.
- Refrain from using high or luxurious beds.
These Precepts are not laws or commandments, but rather ethical guidelines for Buddhists to follow voluntarily as part of their spiritual practice. The observance of the Precepts is meant to help one develop virtue, concentration, and wisdom, and to cultivate a peaceful and harmonious mind. The level of strictness with which individuals follow these Precepts may vary, but it is generally encouraged to follow them as closely as possible to support spiritual growth.
Since we do not charge any cost of the stay, participants will be interviewed by our teaching monks and staff in order to make sure that participants are qualified to stay in the programme and that participants will not just take it for granted. For any donation, we will be really appreciated.
